Forgetful workers ‘cost £5m’

Absent-minded employees who left office appliances running over the summer have cost the economy more than £5m, a survey has revealed.
The research, by energy company E.ON, found more than 700,000 computers are left on while people are on holiday each year, with almost a quarter of workers not bothering to make sure electrical equipment was turned off.
The report said almost one in five bosses said their staff ‘undermine’ their business’ energy saving measures, with more than half of employees ‘reluctant’ to take responsibility for equipment left on, saying responsibility lies with the employer.
“Staff failing to turn off their PC, monitor and printer before leaving for a two-week holiday produces an unnecessary 27kg of CO2 each,” said a spokesperson.
Jim Macdonald, commercial director at E.ON UK, said there are a number of measures employers can encourage their staff to take to save energy.
“Simple actions like turning off electrical equipment before going away can make a big difference when it comes to saving energy and money,” he said.
“Our research highlights the cost to businesses of failing to enforce simple procedures with their staff to ensure everyone is taking responsibility for energy saving.”
“In the current economic climate every penny counts and an increase in energy bills means a reduction in profit. Employers should ensure workers are aware of the savings that can be made at the simple flick of a switch.”
