Free bars and mistletoe could lead to a ‘nightmare’ for small firms if they aren’t careful when planning their Christmas parties, a business support agency warns.
Blue Orchid, which advises thousands of firms across the North West, has compiled a list of key areas where unaware business owners could be caught out and which could lead to tribunals or even criminal prosecutions.
“A free bar or mistletoe may seem like fun but it is important for bosses to make staff aware that employment laws covering bullying, harassment and discrimination still apply at the office party,” warns Blue Orchid director Christine Brown.
Something as innocent as decorating the office could cause problems on both health and safety grounds as well as potentially creating offence if they aren’t appropriate.
Also, office equipment should not be used inappropriately to avoid any embarrassing situations and damages, the agency warns.
Consumtion of alchol can also get out of hand when alchol is free, bosses that put the company’s credit card behind the bar should be careful.
“The Christmas party is a chance to relax, but workers can get overexcited and act out of character,” adds Brown.
“This is not about party pooping it is about planning. Staff will feel valued if employers host a Christmas party and show them that they are thinking about them.
Younger staff should also be looked after, and monitored, while providing taxis can be a good idea as it ensures safe journeys home and that drink driving doesn’t take place.
Employers are also warned not to bring up staff performance during work parties, as they could be misleading and the environment is not appropriate.
