Teamwork suffering in downturn

Workplace teamwork has taken a hit in the recession, new research suggests.
The ‘New Workplace’ study indicates workforces are becoming less inclusive, as 12% of employees admit to becoming more insular.
Just 19% say they prefer to work with colleagues and are looking to safeguard their own projects and contacts.
The findings indicate employees are protecting their own workload in tough economic conditions. However, in difficult economic times, employers are more likely to need collaboration and maximum productivity.
Mike Bourne, professor of business performance at Cranfield University School of Management said: “Team collaboration and knowledge sharing is essential to help businesses chart a way through the current climate. However, while some employees are understandably worried about job security, firms with business processes to automate teamwork are able to reconcile both workforce productivity and personal performance.”
The survey, carried out by YouGov in December 2008, also shows that 27% of workers are putting in longer hours.
