HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has issued a reminder to employers to ensure they file their PAYE end-of-year returns in time for the deadline on May 19.
HMRC said with time running out, employers need to finalise their return and send it as soon as possible – or they could face a penalty.
Employers with fewer than 50 employees were encouraged to file their returns electronically. “Not only is it quicker and easier, but they will get £100 tax-free for doing so,” said a spokesman.
To file online, employers need to register with HMRC’s online PAYE service to receive an activation PIN, which is sent in the post up to a week after registration.
Employers can also ask an agent or their payroll department to file their return.
A spokesperson recommended business owners visit the HMRC website or call the HMRC employer helpline for help or advice.
The website also features a video podcast, which provides an introduction to employer filing online, and can be downloaded free of charge.
Don Macarthur, head of HMRC’s employer team, urged businesses to file their return as soon as possible.
“Don’t leave it to the last minute. Get your employer return in now, and beat the May 19 deadline,” he said.
